“The Case Against Grades”, written by Kohn, has mentioned several effects of the grading system on students such as diminishing students interests, reducing the quality of students thinking and so on. Despite the criticism, the grading system is a great way to acknowledge and reward deserving students as well as motivate average students towards working harder. Why don’t we start thinking about academics, the way we do about sports. In every sport, there is a winner and a loser. If the person coming last in a race was given the same reward as the person in the first position, would that be fair? Grades provide students with incentive to work up to their maximum potential. According to me, the world runs on ‘survival of the fittest’ so training students from a young age to be competitive in a healthy way is very important.
